Upgrading to MacOS 9

As with OS 8, an issue related to serial port arbitration may affect MacNMR users. If you would like to begin using MacOS 9 you will need to disable the 'Open Transport Serial Port Arbitrator' in the Extensions Manager.
  1. Under the Apple Menu select Control Panels/Extensions Manager. This will activate the MacOS Extensions Manager.
  2. Scroll down to the list of extensions (you may be need to expand the list of extensions by clicking on the small triangle to the left) and locate "Open Tpt S...rbitrator". Note that the full name may or not be viewable.
  3. Deselect this extension by clicking on the X to the left. The box to the left of the name should be blank. Please restart the Power Mac.

Upgrading to a G3 or G4 Power Mac

If you are upgrading your Mac-based Tecmag system to a G3 or G4 Power Mac that is equipped with an internal modem and your system uses serial ports for instrument control, a USB to serial adapter is required and the modem must be turned off. To disable the modem, go to the Extensions Manager, deselect the Modem Control Panel, and restart the Power Mac computer. The National Instruments PCI interface card is not supported with MacOS 9.2.2 or MacOS X. Testing has shown that MacOS 9.2.2 installed on the latest generation (Quicksilver) G4 Power Macs cannot read the signal averager. Tecmag recommends not upgrading to Mac OS 9.2.2 or to a new Power Mac G4 that has MacOS 9.2.2 pre-installed.

The fastest G4 Power Mac that is compatible with the National Instruments PCI interface card is the G4/450 with Mac OS 9.1.1.
